Often when the word shelter is mentioned, images arise of homeless families warehoused on cots in a gymnasium, or scattered to various facilities according to gender and age. Fayette Cares extends an invitation to replace those images with the view of a safe and supportive environment where families remain intact and are nurtured on their journey to self-sufficiency. Fayette Cares announces the ribbon cutting ceremony of Hope’s Cottage on Friday, September 5 at 11 a.m. followed by an open house from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. All are invited to participate in the celebration, which will take place at 13320 N. Main St. in Somerville, TN.
Hope’s Cottage is a unique program in Fayette County, providing homeless families with the opportunity to transition from homelessness to independent living. Recognizing that shelter alone is not a cure for homelessness, the program helps families by providing and linking to services that foster self-reliance, including counseling, employment and educational programs, child development services, life skills classes, mental health resources, and permanent housing opportunities.
Because each participant best knows their strengths, limitations and needs, Fayette Cares staff work with families to set personal goals and chart a course for the future. Staff empower families to remove obstacles along the path to self-sufficiency. Fayette Cares was recently honored with a regional award from United Way of the Mid-South for its innovation in developing programs for families in need.
The Hope’s Cottage project has united a community in selfless service. Through gifts from foundations, corporations, government grants, individuals and faith communities, Fayette Cares was able to reach fundraising goals for Hope’s Cottage construction and operating expenses.
