Christmas Caring

Full boxes of food, full trucks of toys and full hearts were found in a Somerville gym during the Fayette Cares Christmas Caring efforts.

At the crack of dawn, volunteers from Walker Farms delivered a semi-trailer full of flour, cereal, soups, canned vegetables, and other non-perishable foods.  After a blessing led by Fayette Cares Board President Matthew Armour, an army of volunteers made record time unloading, then filling boxes to feed 465 families in need.

Boy Scouts hauled hundreds of turkeys donated by St. Ann’s Church and the Knights of Columbus. Fayette Packaging delivered dozens of hens and Hunters for the Hungry prepared packages of venison, which were provided to families that morning.

The hard working volunteers were treated to a festive feast at the hospitality table hosted by St. Philip the Apostle’s Ladies Guild.

In the meantime, on the Somerville Court Square, The Bank of Fayette County Community Room was filled with laughter and playful banter as volunteers of all ages sorted and organized approximately 2,000 toys. Community gifts and contributions from Toys for Tots filled the room with colors, lights and sounds.

Growing numbers of generous donors organized donation drives and made contributions to be sure stockings and stomachs would be filled by a caring community. The increased community involvement couldn’t have come at a better time. Fayette Cares served almost 100 families more this year, the largest increase seen in over 10 years.

Fayette Cares volunteers enjoyed a day of meaningful service working with friends and neighbors to spread Christmas cheer.
