Grocery Help for Struggling Families
With many working fewer hours, laid off, and losing jobs, the struggle to put food on the table brought dozens of families to our doors. At the onset of the pandemic requests for Fayette Cares emergency food services increased by 143% compared to the previous year. And for many it would be their first time in this situation.
Those most vulnerable, like elderly, disabled, and low-income families in self-quarantine, were often unable to get food for fear of contact with the virus. So our teams quickly bolstered deliveries of essential supplies.
A heartwarming boost in community generosity coupled with federal aid made it possible to meet the growing need. Hunger relief efforts expanded to offer regular drive thru grocery distributions thanks to Prairie Farms, M. Palazola Produce Co., and Riviana Foods Inc.. In a single day volunteers gave 25,000 lbs. of produce and 1,000 gallons of milk, dairy products, rice, and pasta.
The thank you messages poured in, with some describing meals they prepared and the joy of receiving this important gift of food. One client wrote “I just unloaded my boxes and it felt like Christmas. So many wonderful things!”
