High Cotton, Higher Spirits at 16th Annual 5k/1k

Despite the rain, participants in the Fayette Cares High Cotton 5k/1k radiated sunshine on Saturday, September 14, the morning of the Fayette County Chamber Cotton Festival. Over 200 runners, walkers, and spectators gathered to celebrate both the event and Fayette County’s Bicentennial, kicking off the race with a spirited “happy birthday” shout and a joyful leap. This annual run/walk has become a beloved tradition, blending fitness, fun, and philanthropy. Funds raised from the race directly support Fayette Cares in providing safety and stability to those facing homelessness, domestic violence, and poverty.

Excitement filled the air as participants made their way to the finish line.  Medals were later awarded from the Cotton Festival stage with great celebration. While every participant was a winner for their caring, but a few stood out for their speed. Fayette Academy Viking Cross Country team member Elijah Stikkelman of Oakland, TN was the Overall Male winner coming in at 20:51.  The first female to cross the finish was Overall Female winner 24 year old Madison Pierski of Somerville, TN with a time of 22:02. The Overall Male Master was Jeremy Warner of Bonita Springs, FL who clocked in at 21:07. Celebrating victory as Overall Female Master for the second year in a row was Amy Lahey of Somerville, TN who finished with a time of 25:06. Also, returning as champions were Overall Female Grand Master Pamela Pierski of Somerville, TN, with a 25:39 finish, and Overall Male Grand Master Dr. Glenn Weatherly of Somerville, TN completing the race in 24:55.
