Kicking Off Domestic Violence Awareness Month

General Sessions Court Judge David Douglas recently had the honor of hosting the kickoff event for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, bringing attention to the critical issue of domestic violence and the meaningful services provided by Fayette Cares.

Powerful statements were made in support of victims and survivors, including remarks from District Attorney Mark Davidson, Fayette County Chief Deputy of Operations Ray Garcia III, and Fayette Cares Executive Director Alexandra Porto. The widespread issue of domestic violence impacts 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men, with severe abuse affecting many at least once in their lifetime according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

County Mayor Skip Taylor officially proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Fayette County. Those in attendance were inspired by Amy Oliver, a domestic violence survivor, former Fayette Cares client and current Board Member, who courageously shared her story of triumph over abuse.

Following the court event, a dedicated group of volunteers from BlueOval SK joined efforts to raise awareness. Under the coordination of Fayette Cares Victim Advocate Jennifer Williams, these volunteers distributed purple ribbons throughout the community and shared information about Fayette Cares services to engage the public in supporting the cause. Local law enforcement showed solidarity by painting purple ribbons on patrol cars for departments including Somerville PD, Piperton PD, Oakland PD, and Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. Their efforts, amplified by the Domestic Violence Awareness Month #DVAM hashtag, encouraged the community to take a stand against domestic violence.
