A Message from Thrift Shop Clerk Patsy Markle

Nearly 13 years ago, I grumbled to my friend about being retired. Staying at home with time on my hands just wasn’t for me. She suggested I get involved with Fayette Cares.

I had never volunteered for anything before, but that same day I went to the agency and offered to help. They quickly put me to work, and I loved it! I picked up food and toys from churches, schools, and businesses, then organized the gifts for our Christmas Caring program. Inside a frigid 48’ tractor trailer, I sorted thousands of canned goods alongside Phil and Andy; a couple of great volunteers. I organized the food pantry and found so much joy in doing things that helped others.

A few years later, I joined the thrift shop team. Here, I often find myself encouraging survivors who, like me, suffered in an abusive relationship.

In a previous marriage, I was so hopeless that I didn’t care if I went to bed and never woke up; I didn’t care if my husband shot and killed me.

But at Fayette Cares, my pain has a purpose. It helps me connect with and encourage other victims of domestic violence. They see me and find hope that they too, can overcome, grow stronger, and be happy.

I love being part of an agency that’s a source of compassion, strength, and support for the homeless, abused, or hungry in our community.

I’m grateful for people like you who also believe in the mission. Because you donate, volunteer, attend events, and tell others about us, you make Fayette Cares and the families we serve stronger.
