One of our wonderful church partners answered the call to fill empty pantry shelves by organizing a food drive with their youth. The group collected an impressive amount of canned goods, then caravanned to Fayette Cares where they would deliver the contributions and take a tour of the emergency pantry.
As the children filed out of their cars and clamored to gather bags of food, one young boy caught my attention.
With a big grin and eyes locked on me, he rushed to my side, struggling to hold his overflowing bag of food. I told him that we would parade into the pantry and appointed him the grand marshal. His response was heartwarming. “I used to live here!” he said.
My heart swelled as I realized the significance of his words. This young boy, once homeless and hungry, found refuge and hope at Fayette Cares. Now, he was back as a donor enthusiastically stocking the shelves to make sure that another child like him would find the same hope he once found.
The boy recounted memories of living in the shelter with joy, pointing to the playground and garden, saying, “I loved it here!” His memories of the time spent at Fayette Cares were not of shame or fear. Instead, they were filled with love.
He recalled the kindness of the staff who always had a smile and a comforting word. For him, the shelter was not just a place to stay; it was a home where he felt safe and cared for.
The boy’s positive experiences and desire to “pay it forward” highlighted the deep impact that community caring has on those we serve. It also demonstrates a two-generational effect: while adults are given a second chance, their children are also empowered.
Gifts from donors like you made it possible for this sweet child to go from being a resident to becoming a donor; a testament to the lasting difference you can make.
